Has Google News taken on a decidedly conservative bent?

It seems to feature a greatly increased percentage of articles with a conservative/right wing bias lately to me.

I highly doubt it that there's any sort of conscious bias on Google's part. Google News isn't a news reporting service, just a search engine and a news aggregator. It would be difficult and unlikely for them to build in any sort of system favoring conservative news stories, and I can't see any reason why they would.

So, several possibilities:
1) News stories from liberal and conservative media will probably be phrased a little differently. Maybe whatever you're looking up is worded in a way that's more likely to be found in conservative media.
2) Similarly, the stories you're looking up might be covered more heavily by conservatives.
3) Search engine optimization allows sites to (some say unfairly) send their results to the top of search engines. Conservatives might be more adept at this.
4) There isn't really a conservative bias - either you're left-of-center enough that most things look conservative, or you're just being hyper-sensitive.

At any rate, if you're looking for more left-wing coverage, have you encountered the left-wing blogosphere? Sites like Daily Kos, Crooks and Liars, Talking Point Memo, and such are great for more liberal points of view. Or if you're looking for unbiased hard news, NPR and the BBC are usually good. Best of luck!

what are the ingredients of an effective online PR compatible with forums like Contentsutra and google news?

what goes into making a real effective, inquiries-generating PR, ONLINE; one that is also accepted at leading forums like content sutra and google news

While there are many different takes on the actual content, the following holds for PRs that are designed for a web audience:

A compelling title;
Story integrated with current events;
Zero selling, news oriented content;
Proper call to action.

The writing style is also important. Be aware that you are writing for a web reader ho can just as easily click away and onto another PR as stay with yours.

They're not as fickle as your average reader (after all, their job is to find the story in the PR), but make their life easier by following the inverted pyramid rule, and providing bulleted lists wherever possible.

(Inverted pyramid = content at the top of the PR, rather than making them read the whole thing.)

In short, it's not too much different from PRs in the 'real world'.

One difference for CS and Google is that keywords will likely be used to pull the PR up, so you need to be sure about what phrases to target. Again, if they are integrated with current events, you'll get a better buzz.

Good luck!

Best,
Guy

How to find all the videos on Google News?

what search operator can i use to achieve this?

Background information:Now you can access videos related to a story, directly from Google News. When there's a video available for a specific story, you'll see a link to it next to the articles covering this topic. If you click the video link, you'll be able to view that video as well as other related videos.

you cannot find all the videos of google news. can only find d videos of those news abt whom google has posted. to find a video, there r diff methods. one is, search for d news of which video u want u will get a link for video if provided by google. 2nd is, u can search on google videos for a particular news. or you can also search for videos on youtube of any news u want. good luck!!!

How does Google News select their featured source for a story?

And the other 2 or 3 stories related to it under that. Then there are 3 or 4 other sources listed under that that you can click on?
Like today I saw a story on there that was about the Minnseota Bridge collapse and the main story's source was from the San Jose Mercury News. I don't get it.

It all depends on the zip code or the country that you live in. They get the news feed from the news servers and you get what is applicable to your area. You also get the world news and just what is current on the news servers.

How do you submit a press release that has a good chance of being picked up by google news or the wire?

Are press releases free? Or are there any fees? Does the wire (or google.com/news) pick up all press releases or do most of them fall through the cracks

Most of them fall through the cracks. Plus getting on
google news is pretty ambitious.

I've had to submit press releases to newspapers, magazines and other various publications via email (maybe about 300). Then I had to call them up, ask them if they received the email and see if they were interested in printing the article. 4 or 5 prints of the press release (out of 300) was considered successful.

Composing your own press release is free (obviously) but distributing them is another story. There are businesses that run on the sole purpose of distributing press releases. You'll have to pay for those. There are also companies that will draft a press release for you. That's money as well.
