What is the difference between knowledge and understanding?

Currently, I'm reading a book about how to .. well… read books. It states that we read books and other materials for two reasons: to gain knowledge (or information), and to gain understanding.

This book claims that sometimes the boundaries between reading to gain knowledge and reading to gain understanding are hazy and hard to differentiate, but they can be identified as seperate goals.

The examples given are these:
When we read for knowledge, we can immediately comprehend what we're reading because we already understand it.

However, when we're reading to understand, we may not understand something entirely — if at all — when we read it.

So, can anyone provide any other examples of how knowledge and understanding differ? Can anyone elaborate?

Ok to set things straight Knowledge is not fact, but rather gathered accepted information. To be fact it has to be proved and can no longer be debated.

Whereas understanding is grasping the meaning of that which has been accepted, by how it was intended.

How Engineers Earn Cash By Sharing Their Knowledge and Experiences

Every engineer has a specific engineering knowledge as he graduated from university or college. When engineers work, their working experiences develop. Each of them has unique experiences, since they work in different organizations, different companies, and various industries.

Unfortunately, most of engineers do not realize the advantages they already have. Most of them do not like to compile their unique knowledge and experiences in form of writing. They just save their knowledge and experiences in their heads. If engineers want to write what they know and their experiences, they could share with other people, such like student, fresh engineers, or anyone else, who search everyday for such kind of information. Even many people would like to exchange their cash to get the information.

By using the internet, engineers could compile their knowledge and experience with easy, free of charge and effective. No programming skills required. You only need to be familiar with using the internet. The easiest and fastest way is through blogging or blog. All you need to start compiling your knowledge and experience are already provided and these are free of charge. Moreover, you could earn cash while you compile the information you have, i.e. through targeted affiliate program. The most common such affiliate program is Google Adsense. Adsense is free to join and could give nice income for you. is an example of engineer’s blog that built using the same principles. The author posts about everything inside a chemical plant, his daily engineering jobs and his own thought about an engineering issue.

To build your own blog, you only need to follow five easy steps as described below. Please finish each step completely. Do not jump to the third step before completing the second step.

1. Do keywords research. Find out what keywords match with your blog’s topic. Do not use keywords for your blog that currently have 10,000,000 websites or blogs competitors. Use search engine and directory for keywords research. To get good keywords you can visit http://www.goodkeyword.com or http://www.wordtracker.com. At wordtracker.com you will have chance to search best keywords based on KEI or Keywords Effective Index at a low price.

2. Create an account at blogger.com. Use the keywords you have chosen in your blog title and blog address. Having created your account, pick up a blog template that you think is suitable with your topic. Start your first post for your new blog. It may contain a welcome letter or anything else. Do not forget to publish your blog.

3. Sign up as Google Adsense Publisher. It may take about 48 hrs to get approval. After getting approval, you can start immediately insert Adsense Code into your blog. Read Adsense Terms and Conditions, to make sure you do not ignore Adsense rules. To insert Adsense code into your blog, simply click Template Adsense. You can choose text ads, link ads, Adsense referral or Google search. You may also customize the ads appearance that matches with your blog to get a high Click Through Rate (CTR).

4. Post regularly to your blog. Remember to use keywords in your post. Readers will love updated and original contents, as well as the search engines. Vary your posts, between short and long posts. It is good to insert picture to your post sometimes to make it interesting
.
5. Promote you blog to major search engines and directories such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. Moreover, do not forget to add your blog to blog directories because these will generate traffic to your blog. You can find list of search engines and directories at http://www.masternewmedia.org/rss/top55 . Other sources of traffic to your blog are link exchange with other blogs on your niche, actively involve in forums and placing good comments to other blogs. Also submit your own articles, which contain a back link to your blog, to article directories and ezines. Ignorance And Lack Of Knowledge Can Lead To Dog Anorexia

When a dog refuses to eat or eats only a portion of the dog food he needs or what he usually eats every day will produce an imbalance in his dog nutrition. The term Anorexia is used to describe the condition when a dog refuses to eat. Many dog owners take their dog’s eating for granted until the dog actually stops eating. A dog’s eating habits are normally controlled by hunger, appetite, and the satisfaction of these two. This control may be abnormally affected by emotions, sensations, or the taste of the dog food.

Another thing that causes a disturbance of the dog’s natural eating behavior is mechanical interruption. Broken jaws, a fish hook in the tongue or a rubber ball stuck in the throat are typical examples of mechanical anorexia. A lot of dog owners think that it is normal for all dogs to miss a meal and that a missed meal is not something to be concerned about. However, a healthy dog is always hungry at meal time, just as a healthy person is. Any time a dog refuses to eathisn dog food, it is a signal to you that something is not right. If the dog refuses two meals in a row, you can be certain that there is something wrong, either with your dog or with his dog food.

Obviously with the lack of dog nutrition, a dog gradually losses weight once he stops eating. A 20 lb Beagle will lose 0.4 pound (six and one-half ounces) each day he refuses to eat. This weight loss occurs because the dog is breaking down and using up his own body. Since there is no dog nutrition coming in, a dog with anorexia must literally burn itself up in order to obtain the energy and nutrients needed for his essential life functions. When extra demands from disease are piled on those suffering from anorexia, the burn-up is even faster. That Beagle cannot afford to lose ½ lb of his body weight every day for very long!

Included within the weight lost will be fats, carbohydrates and protein. The most important loss to a dog is protein. By the end of only two days of anorexia, that 20 lb Beagle will already have lost about 3% of his total body protein. This becomes increasingly important if one considers that protein is essential not only for normal metabolism but for wound healing, tissue repair and combating infections. Actions to replace the intake of anorectic dogs should be implemented immediately. Unwillingness or failure to overcome the deficiencies of calories and nutrients created by anorexia can mean the difference between recovery and death during an illness.

The same dog food the dog was eating before anorexia is suitable, as long as the cause of the anorexia does not make it unsuitable. Because dogs become inactive with anorexia, their calorie need is somewhat less than for most dogs. If they have a fever, however, this rapidly increases their caloric requirements.

Dogs with anorexia must be force-fed either by spoon feeding or by intragastric intubation. This type of dog food diet should be fed only long enough to get a dog back to eating satisfactorily on his own and should never become a substitute for actually determining the cause of the anorexia or for overcoming that cause.

Expensive Mistakes And Priceless Knowledge

Obtaining financing can be very expensive, though it doesn’t have to be as expensive as it often is. If a borrower is informed on the purpose of the fees being charged and what the normal amount is for these fees, he can avoid being taken advantage of and paying too much.

Most financing fees are negotiable. The best leverage in negotiating down your lender’s fees is a Good Faith Estimate. This is an estimate that a lender is required to give to a prospective borrower. It is to inform the borrower of all the costs associated with obtaining financing through that particular lender. By obtaining a number of Good Faith Estimates, you can compare to see who the less expensive lenders are. Just because they may charge less doesn’t mean they are the lender that you should go through. More importantly, you want a lender that can provide you with the type of loan you need. However, you can use the lower cost Good Faith Estimates to negotiate with the lender you prefer to use if his fees are more costly. You’ll need to make sure that the Good Faith Estimate contains all the fees that apply to obtaining the financing, not just the lender fees.

To determine what your monthly payment will be for an interest-only loan, you need to know how to calculate simple interest. To compute simple interest, use the following formula:

MIP = P x R/12

MIP = monthly interest payment

P = principal

R = rate

Apply this formula to a $100,000 loan (P) at 10 percent® divided by 12 (months in a year).

MIP = $100,000 x .10 = $10,000 (the annual interest charged) divided by 12

MIP = $833.33

Combined Payment Schedules:

There are loans that combine both the interest-only payment option with a fully amortized payment option. That is, you can take out a loan that requires only interest payments for the first so many years and then converts to a fully amortized loan for the remaining period.

Biweekly Payments:

Biweekly payments are payments that are paid every two weeks. Instead of paying a full month’s payment at one time, biweekly payments divide the monthly obligation in half, due every other week. Because there are 52 weeks in a year, 26 half payments are made, which equals 13 whole payments. This is one more payment made per year than with loans that require one full monthly payment. Due to this extra payment as well as the more frequent deductions to the principal, loans on biweekly schedules can be paid off significantly faster. A 30-year fixed mortgage, paid biweekly, will be paid off in 22 years, saving the borrower 8 years worth of payments. We recommend setting up biweekly payments for every loan that the lender will allow.

Length of Term:

The length of the loan is the time that the terms of the loan require it to be paid off in full. The most common loan periods are 15 or 30 years, but there are numerous other options. You can opt for a term as short as 6 months or as long as the lender will permit, not too often past 40 years.

Short-term Loans:

Short-term loans offer lower interest rates, but your payments are larger due to the short period of time you have to pay off the entire balance. Because you are paying down your principal quickly, the total amount of interest you pay by the end of the term is significantly less than with longer-term loans. Short-term loans are great for building equity more quickly.

Long-term Loans:

A long-term loan is beneficial if the current rates are low and you plan to hold on to your property. Longer-term loans can help to increase your cash flow because the payment is stretched out over a longer period of time, so you pay less each month. The longer the term, the lower your monthly payment, but the longer it takes to increase equity by paying off principal and the more you will ultimately be paying in interest on the property.

Balloon Payments:

You can also combine benefits of both short-term loans and long-term loans with a mortgage that is due in full prior to the length of time its payment schedule is based on. For example, you can take out a loan with payments amortized based on a 30-year term, but agree to pay the loan in full in three years. Your payments are especially low with this type of loan because they are stretched out over a 30-year period and your interest rate is discounted due to the short three-year term. Because the payments over the term will not satisfy the entire amount owed by the end of the term, there will be a large balance due. This is called a balloon payment. The borrower will have to have the means to make this balloon payment at the end of the term. Because most people do not have enough funds sitting in their pockets to make a balloon payment, they usually pay it off with a refinance, or have sold the property before the end of the term. If you plan to sell a property shortly after the time you first take out the loan, a balloon payment is a beneficial way to go. Because of the short term, your interest rate is much lower.

Due-on-Sale Clause:

Whether a loan has a long term or a short term, they almost always have a due-on-sale clause. This clause gives the lender the right to call the loan due if you sell the property that it is collateralized by. If a lender calls a loan due, the borrower usually has only 30 days to pay it in full.

Basic Knowledge of Foreign Exchange

The purpose of this article is to add our knowledge, preparations before we enter the Forex world which is very dynamic and volatile.

Let’s start with four basic foundations that we need before we enter forex.

Forex trading is not a way to make us rich

Time needed to study the science of Forex trading, a successful trader don’t come up with a formula in one single night. What is needed are: Practice + Patience + Persistent = Profit

Only take one or two pairs of currency

It will be complicated if we take up the four main currency because we will have difficulties controlling it.

Watch for Forex News and Forex analysis

Although forex system is based on chart analysis, we must also pay attention to the latest news that will affect price. Knowing exactly whether it’s support or resistant, and analysis whether a news can drive the price to support or persistant.

Only use techniques that you master

Make it habit to use only one method you master in playing forex. Before mastering other techniques it is better to understand and master fully one forex trading method.

Also remember that once we enter the forex, we must have a good strategy. Putting stop loss in every trade because every trader have a certain level of tolerance in losses that he could take and depend on the capital that one has.

  • Try virtual trading before going to the real world
  • Trading is what you see not what you think
  • Win or lose is common things, the most important things are trading formula and discipline.
  • 90% failed because they are indiscipline, 10% then broke.
  • Money management is very important, taking up a lots of gain must be put out of your head.

The advice is to use money that won’t affect our financial if we lose it. Prepare ourselves the best before entering the market. Do not underestimate something because it looks easy. Buy in low price, sell it on its top then we’ll get profit from it and profit that we might not get in other business. It’s very sweet but 90% traders failed and 10% of them broke.

Slowly but sure. This kind of mental is had to find in traders’ mind. They all want big profits but what the get is only the other way. Don’t always follow your passion, remember always to buy at low price and sell it while it’s on its top.

What degree of knowledge do you have of the world around us?

Are you well traveled? Do you read a lot of books? What is the source of your knowledge?

Do you think it is important to have this type of knowledge? What valuable lessons can this knowledge teach us?

I'm very well travelled (moved around to lots of different countries as a kid due to my dad's job), I read a lot, I watch a lot of documentaries, I actively seek knowledge on things, I feel a need to know both sides of an argument before I form an opinion on it, I am non-biased in my interests (no specific political or religious ideology).

I think it's very important to have a broad knowledge and understanding. We're all part of the world, and knowing about it has got to be partially beneficial. It enables you to hold a conversation with various different people with various different interests or backgrounds.

On the other hand, it can be depressing and make you cynical. Maybe ignorance is bliss after all.

What are the ways in which Employee are sharing knowledge currently in Your Organisation?

What are the factors that affect their willingness to share or not share their knowledge?
What changes could be made in the organisation to encourage him or her to share knowledge? How could the environment be made more conducive for knowledge sharing?

UPS is a fortune 500 company. One of the ways it has grown so large is by incorporating employees concern and ideas into its business development. John Casey the founder of UPS made sure that we as a company never lost sight of the employee. That is why we are voted one of the top 10 companies in the world with the regards to employee relations. I know that in my workplace we have an HR team that is constantly trying to balance management concerns with the employees. We also have a top notch open door policy. Anybody can go to their boss with a concern and voice it without fear that they will be judged by it or have it used against them. (stepping off my soapbox…) My guess as to what would be the best way to improve knowledge sharing would be to remove the risk involved, that has seemed to help us a little. Keep in mind I am not saying that all ideas have to be implemented but I think they should all be heard.
