Pop Music 2008: MySpace Weighs in With Its Own Very Different List
Posted by admin, under Information, News
Earlier this month, both iTunes and Last.fm revealed their most popular artists, songs, and albums from 2008. Today, MySpace has followed suit with a list of its own – The Top 8’s of ’08 - revealing yet more differences in the type of music that users of different services listen to.
For example, Coldplay, who had the most listened to album and top tracks on both iTunes and Last.fm, is nowhere to be found on MySpace’s charts. Further, hip-hop and country, largely absent from the two services, have a huge presence atop MySpace’s list. Here’s a look at the lists of MySpace’s top music, as well as winners from a few other categories analyzed by the social network:

1. Taylor Swift
2. Chris Brown
3. Kanye West

While perhaps not surprising results given what we already presumed to know about the site’s users, the big differences between MySpace’s list and that of its music rivals highlight what we increasingly see as a battle of demographics, both on the websites themselves and in the upcoming identity management battle between Facebook Connect, MySpaceID, and Google Friend Connect.
Ultimately, such a split might be good news for everyone involved, because as opposed to their audiences eroding and migrating to a competitor, their core users will become even more strongly tied to the respective social networks as those identities become universal logins across the Web.
Of course, feel free to simply comment about your own personal love or disdain for the music featured, a popular activity on our post about the iTunes and Last.fm lists
